WHITMAN — Chief Timothy Clancy reports that the Whitman Fire Department and mutual aid partners extinguished a house fire on Monday afternoon.
On Monday, June 2, at approximately 2:57 p.m., Whitman Fire responded to reports of a house fire at 39 Railroad Ave.
On arrival, Car 3 observed heavy fire at the rear of the house, and black smoke coming from the roof.
The first arriving companies were able to use a blitz gun on a fire engine to bring the heavy fire at the rear of the house under control within about 10 minutes.
“Because of an active ambulance call, we originally only sent four firefighters to the scene,” Chief Clancy said. “Those firefighters’ immediate actions were the reason why we were able to keep the fire in check until our mutual aid partners arrived on scene.”
Additional fire was located inside the house on multiple levels, including the basement and attic.
Crews conducted an aggressive interior and exterior attack to knock down the fire, stretching a total of four hoselines into the home to knock down the flames. Extensive overhaul was also required once the fire was knocked down.
There were no reported injuries.
Four adults and two children were displaced due to the fire. The American Red Cross of Massachusetts is assisting the family with housing and other needs.
The Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit attached to the State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to assist Whitman Fire and Whitman Police with the investigation, which remains ongoing.
The Abington, Bridgewater, East Bridgewater and Hanson fire departments provided mutual aid at the scene. A Halifax ambulance also responded. A Rockland fire engine provided station coverage.
“The members and our mutual aid partners did an amazing job of extinguishing this fire, and I’m truly proud of the professionalism, dedication, and of how hard all the firefighters worked to get this fire under control,” Chief Clancy said.
