NEW LONDON — Superintendent John Fortney and Principal Stephen Paterson are pleased to share the success of the Kearsarge Regional Middle School (KRMS) Math Team in its return to competition in the Twin State Math League.
This year marks the first since the COVID-19 pandemic that KRMS has had a team to compete. The team consists of eight students: Anya Hartford, Iris Patrick, Tekken Parthum, Hayden and Rozzie Bleier, Lola Garcia, Dane Henrichsen and Ben Battis. The team is led by Grade 7 mathematics teacher Steve Shepherd.
The students have had a successful season competing in the Twin State Math League’s several meets, most recently on March 27 at an in-person competition at Woodstock Union High School.
The Twin State Math League, a program run by mathleague.org, offers mathematic competitions designed to foster math skills through online testing opportunities, helpful feedback, advanced technology, appropriate challenges and more.
Throughout the season, students tackled challenging math problems in categories such as real, rational and irrational numbers, solving simple equations, lines, angles and triangles, and combinations and permutations (in the mini-team category).
At one of the team’s meets, Hartford earned individual recognition as the top scorer. She also placed second overall in another meet.
The team also achieved a perfect score during the mini-team match, demonstrating the group’s growing strength and teamwork.
“Congratulations to all on a great season. The group showed impressive effort for their first season together,” said Principal Paterson. “Mr. Shepherd is extremely proud of the great start the team had this year and is looking forward to seeing the team incorporate all that they learned and become even more competitive next year.”
