WEST BRIDGEWATER — Chief Timothy Nixon is pleased to share that the West Bridgewater Police Department is offering a Citizen’s Police Academy in January, and registration for the series of sessions is now open.
WHEN:
Classes will be held from 6-8:30 p.m., every Wednesday from Jan. 8 through Feb. 26.
WHERE:
West Bridgewater Middle-Senior High School, 155 West Center St., West Bridgewater
WHAT:
The free eight-week program will consist of lectures and hands-on experiences to educate the public about daily operations within the West Bridgewater Police Department.
Attendees will hear from various leaders in law enforcement and will learn about various aspects of policing within the West Bridgewater community. Topics include:
- Constitutional, criminal and motor vehicle law
- Court procedure
- Community policing procedures
- Work within the Detective Unit of the West Bridgewater Police Department
- The W.E.B. Major Crimes and Drug Task Force
- West Bridgewater K-9 Unit
- Other specialized units within Massachusetts, including the SEMLEC SWAT Team
Detective Jared Percival, who is organizing the program this year, shared that his goal for the academy is to give the general public an opportunity to learn about what policing in their community looks like and to address misconceptions the public may have surrounding police work.
“I want to continue to promote transparency between us and the community, and maintaining that trust between officers and the public is paramount to our job,” Percival said. “I believe we already have a strong relationship with the community, but I look forward to strengthening that bond while having fun with some hands-on experiences.”
The academy is open to West Bridgewater residents over 18 years old, and applications to join the program can be found here. Sign-ups will close on Dec. 13.
Completed applications and liability waivers can be submitted via email to Detective Jared Percival at jpercival@wbpd.com or can be delivered in person to the West Bridgewater Police Department at 99 West Center St. #2.
