CANTON — Town Administrator Charles Doody and the Canton Select Board wish to thank the community for supporting the Town’s hurricane relief donation drive.
The Town of Canton recently hosted a hurricane relief donation drive to support those affected by Hurricane Helene in North Carolina. The Town collected donations over several days in early November at the Canton Police Department and Canton Fire Department Headquarters, and then held a donation drop-off event on Nov. 9 at the former St. Gerard’s Church.
Volunteers from the Armstrong Company in Canton recently drove the supplies to a North Carolina Day One Relief distribution center. The delivered supplies included dehumidifiers, space heaters, construction tools, infant supplies, pet food, cleaning supplies, personal protective equipment, and new clothing.
Day One Relief informed the volunteers from Canton that the organization intended to distribute the items to people impacted by Hurricane Helene before Thanksgiving.
The volunteers at the Nov. 9 donation drive included Town of Canton municipal employees, Select Board member John Connolly, Armstrong Company employees, and FM Generator employees.
Armstrong Company employees took the items back to their facility on New Boston Drive to palletize and wrap the donations to make them ready for transport. The Armstrong tractor-trailer drove to North Carolina on Nov. 13.
The Town of Canton wishes to recognize the Canton Department of Public Works crews who set up the donation drive site and made it safe for donors and volunteers. The Town also wants to thank Dunkin’ Brands for providing coffee and doughnuts to volunteers.
The City of Brockton and the Town of Berkley also brought donations to Canton’s drive because neither could transport the supplies south.
“Our hurricane relief donation drive was hugely successful thanks to the extreme generosity of our community and our dedicated volunteers who made the event possible,” Town Administrator Doody said. “Thank you to everyone who donated supplies and volunteered their valuable time to help us do our part to support North Carolinians in need.”
