BOURNE — Superintendent Kerri Anne Quinlan-Zhou and Bourne Middle School Principal Christine Borning are pleased to share that more than 100 Bourne Middle School students recently traveled to Washington D.C., where they visited a number of the nation’s most important landmarks and institutions, including the White House, the U.S. Capitol and the National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.

Over four days in late May, 120 eighth graders from Bourne toured the nation’s capital, learning about the different branches of government, experiencing some of the country’s most profound museums and spending time together as a class.

The students also visited the memorials for Franklin D. Roosevelt and Martin Luther King and walked through the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. They also took a guided nighttime tour of the National Mall and many of the monuments located there.

Students also enjoyed a dinner out together and a night of bowling. The trip was coordinated through Close Up, a national non-profit that helps schools organize experiential visits to Washington D.C. using an issue-centric, nonpartisan curriculum that gives participants a deeper understanding of history, government institutions, current issues and the role of citizens.

Bourne Middle School Students who did not attend participated in a week of learning activities and field trips locally. Field trips included a visit to Mass. Maritime Academy, a round of mini-golf and a bird-walk at the Cape Cod Canal. In addition, the Buttonwood Zoo made a presentation at the middle school.
