DIGHTON – Town Administrator Michael Mullen, together with the Dighton Board of Selectmen, would like to share information about the upcoming Annual Town Meeting and some of the Warrant Articles that residents will be asked to consider.
The Town of Dighton’s Annual Town Meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 10, at 7 p.m. in the Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School Auditorium, 2700 Regional Road, in North Dighton. Town officials encourage all Dighton residents who are registered voters to attend.
At the Town Meeting, voters will consider 38 Warrant Articles, which include the Town’s Fiscal Year 2025 Operating Budget, raising funds for the multi-year Main Street reconstruction and sidewalk installation project, funding for drainage improvements on Old Somerset Avenue, funding for the lease/purchase of a new excavator for the highway department, the purchase of a fully-equipped Dighton Police cruiser, telephone system upgrades outfitted with e-911 capabilities for the Dighton Public Schools and various proposed updates to the Town of Dighton General Bylaws.
“Efforts to plan for the next fiscal year have once again centered on a conservative, zero-base justified budget framework initiated by the Board of Selectmen that extended to all departments, boards and committees,” said Town Administrator Mullen. “We are continuing to adapt to significant fiscal challenges shaped by a variety of outside factors that have required thoughtful and careful attention.”
The proposed Fiscal Year 2025 operating budget continues investments in education and core public safety and municipal services, but the Town faces funding challenges relating to limited new available revenues to fund increasing education, education capital assessment and solid waste costs. Fiscal Year 2025 is the second year of the Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School building project debt service being assessed, next year in the amount of $217,000, which is expected to increase by more than $400,000 to approximately $630,000 in Fiscal Year 2026. The proposed budget being recommended relies on funding the Fiscal Year 2025 B-P school building capital debt assessment with free cash, but it is unlikely the Town will have the same ability to fund the increased debt assessment with free cash in Fiscal Year 2026.
