Burlington Fire and Police Respond to Gas Leak at Burlington Mall

BURLINGTON — Fire Chief James Browne and Police Chief Thomas P. Browne report that the Burlington Fire and Police Departments responded to the Burlington Mall on Wednesday morning for report of a gas leak.

On Wednesday, April 8, at about 8:50 a.m., the Fire Department received report of a construction incident at the Burlington Mall. Police also responded.

Crews determined that a forklift operating in the area of Nordstrom’s had struck a gas line, prompting crews to evacuate the mall.

Burlington Fire contacted National Grid to assist with shutting off the gas in the building. National Grid arrived on scene, and was able to shut off service at about 10:40 a.m.

Fire crews walked through the entire mall with National Grid staff, and meters did not detect any dangerous gases or gas levels present in the building. The mall has since cleared to reopen.

A slight odor may still be detected throughout the building, but there is no concern to the public.

All of Burlington Fire’s on-duty crews responded. Off-duty crews were called in to respond to other incidents, which included several medical-related calls.

The Burlington Building Department also responded. Town Administration and the Department of Public Works were notified.
