WOBURN — Superintendent Matthew Crowley and Linscott-Rumford Elementary School Principal Ken Kessaris are proud to recognize the accomplishments of fifth-grade student Ethan Hwang, who recently completed an impressive run at a regional free-throw shooting competition.

Hwang, like many students across the district, first participated in Elks National Hoop Shoot during physical education class. He demonstrated exceptional skill, earning first place at Linscott-Rumford before advancing through the city, district and state levels.

His success resulted in a third-place finish at the regional competition this month in Portland, Maine. Competing against six other students, he secured third place by winning a shootout.

Recalling his favorite moment from the experience, Hwang shared that he especially enjoyed parading the Massachusetts flag around the gym in Portland ahead of the competition.

“There was a lot of pressure during the competition. I was worried about the final score,” said Hwang. “But as I was shooting, I felt confident in my skills.”

In addition to the competition, participants had the chance to connect with other students during activities such as group meals and social events.

Hwang’s accomplishments extend beyond this competition. As a member of his fifth-grade basketball team, he contributed to a 12-6 season and a playoff appearance. One of his standout moments includes a breakaway layup that sealed a victory over Pelham earlier in the season.

“We are so proud of Ethan’s dedication, perseverance and sportsmanship during this competition,” said Superintendent Crowley. “He reflects the values encouraged by the district’s athletic department, and we look forward to seeing him compete in the future.”

Hwang plans to participate in soccer this spring while continuing to train for the next basketball season. The district looks forward to supporting his continued growth both on and off the court.
