Pentucket Students Showcase Environmental Work Through Gulf of Maine Institute Partnership

WEST NEWBURY — Superintendent Justin Bartholomew shares that Pentucket Middle/High School will host a community open house on May 9.

The open house will highlight student-led, environmental learning developed through the district’s partnership with the Gulf of Maine Institute (GOMI). The event will bring together students, educators and community members to celebrate ongoing projects rooted in GOMI’s community-based model.

Through GOMI’s approach, students engage in learning that connects classroom studies to environmental challenges in local communities and across the Gulf of Maine watershed.

Students at Pentucket have been involved in projects that raise environmental awareness, civic engagement and scientific inquiry. These initiatives encourage students to contribute to sustainability efforts and develop an understanding of the relationship between their community and the Gulf of Maine watershed.

The open house will provide an opportunity for students to present their work, share research findings and demonstrate the meaningful action they have taken. Notably, the program’s current chair, Silas Bucco, is a 2021 Pentucket graduate, reinforcing the impact of the district’s commitment to student leadership and environmental stewardship.

Through a continued collaboration with GOMI, Pentucket Regional School District aims to expand opportunities for students to engage in project-based learning that addresses challenges in their community.

“This partnership provides our students with authentic learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom and into communities,” said Superintendent Bartholomew. “By participating in real-world environmental work, students are building the skills and sense of responsibility needed to become thoughtful, active citizens.”
