LITTLETON – Following the success of last year’s Special Olympics Day of Games, Maynard and Littleton Public Schools are partnering with CASE Collaborative and Harvard, Bedford, and Sudbury Public Schools to host the event again this spring.
On Monday, May 18, students, staff, and volunteers will gather at Alumni Field in Littleton for a day of community and competition.
Students will participate in a variety of games and activities, including basketball shooting, 30-, 40-, and 50-yard dashes, 100-meter relay, long toss, tee-ball hitting challenge, shuttle run relay, a variation of soccer, cornhole toss, and bowling.
The Day of Games aims to create an uplifting and encouraging environment for students with disabilities through opportunities to enhance physical fitness and prepare for participation in school and community programs.
“We are thrilled to host the Special Olympics Day of Games again this May,” said Dr. Kelly Clenchy, Superintendent of Littleton Public Schools. “Last year’s event was filled with positivity and friendly competition, and we are now expanding the Day of Games to include even more school districts. We look forward to welcoming new students and staff to this event.”
Educators, staff, and administrators spend months planning every aspect of the event, from transportation to equipment and everything in between, while maintaining their everyday duties within the schools.
During the Day of Games, students are supported by staff and Unified Partners, student volunteers who are selected by school staff based on their demonstration of kindness.
“The Day of Games is an exciting opportunity to experience how kindness and collaboration can result in something truly special,” said Brian Haas, Superintendent of Maynard Public Schools. “Our staff and student volunteers are working hard to ensure the day is comfortable and fun for everyone involved, and we greatly appreciate their efforts.”
Family members are welcome to attend the Day of Games to support their child and their classmates.
