WHITMAN — The Whitman Fire Department and mutual aid partners responded Friday afternoon to a structure fire that appears to have been caused by a charging E-bike.
On Friday, March 27, at approximately 5:10 p.m., the Whitman Fire Department was notified by the Holbrook Regional Emergency Communications Center of a report of a garage fire with someone possibly still inside at 51 Donahue Drive.
Firefighters reached the scene within four minutes, and found smoke showing from an attached two-vehicle garage.
Firefighters from Whitman Car 3, Engine 242, and Ladder 246, and a ladder truck from East Bridgewater Fire responded to the scene and discovered that a homeowner had already extinguished a fire in the garage.
Firefighters overhauled the area of the fire to ensure there was no extension into the home and ventilated smoke.
An initial investigation determined that the fire started in the area of a charging E-bike, and that the cause appears to be accidental.
There were no reported injuries.
The fire caused an estimated $40,000 in damage, which includes belongings that were in the garage.
Whitman firefighters ensured the fire was out and that the situation was safe before allowing residents back into the home.
Abington firefighters provided station coverage during the incident. The Whitman Wiring Inspector and Building Inspector also provided assistance, as did the Whitman Board of Health.
