NAHANT – Community members are invited to attend a webinar regarding a proposal to create an Affordable Housing Trust in Nahant on Tuesday, March 31.
Shelly Goehring, Senior Program Manager at the Massachusetts Housing Partnership, will present information about trusts at the webinar, scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Goehring will define municipal affordable housing, and what a trust may mean to the community.
Residents will have ample time at the end of the presentation to ask questions and share their thoughts.
Town leaders are working on a proposal to create a trust, which will be presented to Town Meeting for consideration on Saturday, May 16.
Such trusts are public bodies enabled under state law and can hold money and property independent of municipal government. Trusts may be able to access funding from non-traditional sources.
Trusts generally support affordable housing through:
- Providing homebuyers assistance, such as funding down payments or closing costs, and more
- Interest-rate buy-down initiatives
- Rental assistance vouchers
- Home preservation, purchasing, and rehabilitation
- Pre-development financing for new construction of affordable rental units.
