Merrimac Fire Department Battle House Fire, Asks Motorists to Avoid the Area

MERRIMAC — The Merrimac Fire Department battled a house fire on Bear Hill Road and is asking motorists to avoid the area as crews remain on scene conducting overhaul operations.

On Wednesday, March 11, at 5:38 a.m., Merrimac Fire responded to reports of a working fire at a two-family home located at 18 Bear Hill Road.

Crews arrived to find fire in a workshop area attached to the home.

One of the two occupants of the residence was home at the time the fire started and was removed by Merrimac Police crews who responded. They were evaluated on scene and did not require further medical care.

Crews were able to knock the fire down by about 8:20 a.m.

Mutual aid support was provided by Merrimac Police and the Fire Departments of Amesbury, Salisbury, West Newbury, Newburyport, and Plaistow, N.H.

The Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit attached to the State Fire Marshal’s Office also responded on scene and is assisting Merrimac Fire in their investigation.

Bear Hill Road has been shut down to motorists while crews continue to conduct overhaul operations. School bus companies have been notified to avoid the area.
