TOWNSEND — School nurse Amber Mendes, of Varnum Brook Elementary School, has been awarded the Rising Star Award for Region 6 by the Massachusetts School Nurse Organization (MSNO).
MSNO’s Rising Star Award is a new annual recognition honoring school nurses who have been in the practice for less than five years. Rising Stars demonstrate professionalism, passion for the specialty, continued growth in their practices, and a commitment to students and the school community.
Mendes has been a dedicated nurse for 19 years and has worked at Varnum Brook Elementary for one and a half years. She earned her certificate in Practical Nursing in 2007 from Mount Wachusett Community College (MWCC). In 2024, she completed the LPN-to-RN bridge program at MWCC and graduated with an Associate Degree in Nursing. Her diverse nursing background includes pediatric office nursing, medium-security correctional nursing, long-term pediatric care, community health, orthopedic nursing, home care, triage, and summer camp nursing.
“Amber’s dedication to her students and commitment to excellence embody the spirit of this award,” said Superintendent Morgan. “We are incredibly grateful for the compassion and commitment she brings to the role every day. She could not be more deserving of this award.”
One Rising Star is selected from each of MSNO’s 10 regions across the state.
The award will be presented to Mendes on Saturday, March 21, during the MSNO Spring Conference in Dedham. The conference brings together school nurses from across the state to share best practices and celebrate excellence in the field.
The award is a true reflection of the North Middlesex School District’s health services team and their commitment to outstanding work.
