METHUEN — Mayor D.J. Beauregard has ordered the immediate closure of the Oakland Avenue Bridge located over the Methuen Rail Trail, including the section of the rail trail beneath and immediately surrounding the bridge.

These measures are being taken out of an abundance of caution. The closure takes effect immediately.

The bridge, originally constructed in 1935, has recently exhibited significant deterioration, and the Department of Public Works has been proactively checking on the bridge to ensure public safety.

A recent inspection identified a hole in the bridge deck and exposed rebar. As a result, the bridge will remain closed to vehicular traffic, and the impacted portion of the rail trail will remain closed to all users, pending repair of the structure.

Clearly marked traffic detour routes will be in place.

The City is coordinating with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and state partners regarding next steps. The Mayor is in direct contact with the Healey-Driscoll Administration and members of the state legislative delegation to expedite the bridge’s repair.

“I recognize that these closures will cause inconvenience given the traffic volume in the area and the popularity of the rail trail, but the safety of motorists, pedestrians, and rail trail users is my top priority,” said Mayor Beauregard. “City staff and I will be working diligently with our state and legislative partners to ensure these safety issues are addressed as soon as possible.”

Updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.
