TOWNSEND — School nurse Laurie Sheridan of Hawthorne Brook Middle School has been named School Nurse of the Year by the Massachusetts School Nurse Organization (MSNO).

Sheridan will be recognized at the MSNO Spring Conference on March 21 in Dedham. The award recognizes practicing nurses for outstanding achievements in the school nursing specialty.

She has been selected to receive the award for her excellence in school nursing and dedication to student health and wellness.

Sheridan has been a nurse for over 35 years, the past 19 years working at Hawthorne Brook Middle School. She earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Massachusetts Lowell, became a nationally certified school nurse in 2013, and obtained her Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education certification in 2009.

Her background includes medical-surgical nursing, home care, long-term care, and rehabilitation. She is also an active member in the district, serving as a certified American Heart Association CPR instructor, where she provides training to staff members.

In addition to her role as school nurse, Sheridan runs the school’s spring Garden Club, where students learn landscaping, seed starting, and how to grow vegetables and flowers that are then sold within the community.

To be named School Nurse of the Year, nominees must hold a MSNO and National School Association of School Nurses (NASN) for two years, must currently be employed as a school nurse, demonstrate expertise in school nursing, effective management of a comprehensive school health program, display excellence in health teaching, have a role in nursing research, and leadership or participation in professional organizations.

In addition to the MSNO recognition, Sheridan will also receive an invitation from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to attend a statewide award ceremony in May, further honoring her achievements.

As part of MSNO’s ceremony in March, Sheridan will also receive a commemorative check.

“Laurie’s commitment to the safety and well-being of our students is evident every day,” said Superintendent Morgan. “This recognition not only highlights her professionalism, but also the critical role school nurses play in supporting student success.”
