Town of Wenham to Host Visit from Japanese Company Miyashita Ice & Cold Storage Co.

WENHAM — Town Administrator Steve Poulos is pleased to share that the Town of Wenham will be hosting a visit with Japanese Ice Company, Miyashita Ice & Cold Storage Co.

Miyashita Ice & Cold Storage Co. is scheduled to visit Wenham on Monday, March 2, at 1 p.m.

During the visit, representatives from Miyashita Ice & Cold Storage Co. will meet with Wenham Select Board members, Historical Commission members, and Town Hall staff before touring the Wenham Museum’s ice trade exhibits and presentations.

Officials will then give Miyashita Ice & Cold Storage Co. a tour of Wenham Lake, which has historic roots in the ice-making industry.

Wenham Lake was utilized as an ice-company dating back to the 1800s. Natural ice formed on the lake and was then exported to Asia and other parts of the world.

Miyashita Ice & Cold Storage Co. also began its company with the handling of natural ice. Ice from Wenham Pond first entered Japan after 1859.

“We are excited to host representatives from Miyashita Ice & Cold Storage Co. and discuss our town’s history of ice making,” said Town Administrator Poulos. “This is a wonderful opportunity to collaborate through history, culture, and the long practice of using natural bodies of water to produce and export ice.”
