DRACUT — The Dracut Fire Department extinguished a working fire in a home on Mammoth Road late Thursday night, and the quick response of companies ensured the fire did not spread.

On Thursday, Feb. 19, at approximately 10:41 p.m., the Dracut Fire Department was called to 693 Mammoth Road for a report of a possible structure fire.

Engine 3 was the first company to arrive and found smoke and fire showing from the first floor of a 2 1/2-story home. All residents had evacuated on their own.

The crew of Engine 3 quickly stretched a hose line into the home and knocked down a fire on the first floor, preventing the flames from spreading throughout the building. The fire was knocked down by about 11 p.m.

A quick knockdown of the fire ensured that flames did not spread through the home’s walls — a major danger since the home was built with balloon construction, which leaves space inside the walls where fire can spready quickly.

There were no reported injuries.

Firefighters from Pelham, N.H., provided mutual aid at the scene, while firefighters from Lowell, Methuen, and Tyngsborough covered Dracut fire stations.

Fire damage was contained to the first-floor room where the fire originated, with slight extension to an outside wall. Three residents were displaced, but they were able to find other accommodations.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Dracut Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Unit.

“Engine 3 was able to respond from our Nashua Road fire station in time to contain this fire to the first floor of the home,” said Chief Michael Cunha. “Companies did a great job of containing this fire. I would also like to thank all of our mutual aid partners for their support.”
