SEEKONK — Superintendent Rebecca Kidwell and Athletic Director Kathryn Manigan are pleased to announce that Brendan Costa has been appointed as the new Head Football Coach at Seekonk High School.
Costa, who previously served as offensive coordinator, quarterback coach and defensive back coach, took over the new role as head coach effective Feb. 10.
“Brendan has demonstrated a strong commitment to our student-athletes and to the values that define Seekonk Public Schools,” said Superintendent Kidwell. “He understands the importance of building a program that emphasizes accountability, teamwork and character, and we are confident he will provide outstanding leadership for our football program.”
“Throughout the selection process, it was clear that Brendan brings not only a deep knowledge of coaching football, but also a thoughtful approach to mentoring young people,” Superintendent Kidwell added. “We look forward to seeing him continue to strengthen the Seekonk High School culture that supports student growth both on and off the field.”
Costa was selected following a comprehensive interview process conducted by an eight-member committee that included district administrators, coaches, student-athletes and a parent representative. The committee reviewed a highly competitive pool of applicants before ultimately selecting Costa for his experience within the program, his understanding of high school athletics and his focus on cultivating a positive, disciplined team culture.
Costa first joined Seekonk High School’s coaching staff in 2023 as offensive coordinator, quarterback coach and defensive backs coach. During his time on the coaching staff, the team showed consistent offensive growth, averaging 27 points per game in 2024 and setting a new program mark for points scored in the annual Thanksgiving rivalry game that season.
Prior to joining Seekonk, Costa served on the football coaching staff at Williams College, doing offensive quality control and serving as a running backs and tight ends coach. His collegiate coaching experience followed a successful playing career at Bates College, where he served as a team captain and earned conference recognition.
Costa called it a great opportunity to lead a program that he has already helped shape over the past three seasons.
“I feel that my experience both at the collegiate level and here at Seekonk has prepared me well for this role,” Costa said. “My focus is on building a strong, disciplined foundation where every player understands their responsibility to the team and takes pride in doing their job at a high level.”
Costa spoke about his aims to build a program rooted in accountability, adaptability and player development.
“I am excited to have the opportunity to lead our student-athletes and continue building on the work we have started,” Costa said. “My philosophy centers on discipline, communication and effort — controlling the things we can control and striving to improve every day. We will adapt our schemes to fit our players’ strengths, keep our systems clear and effective, and emphasize a team culture of accountability, positivity and shared achievement.”
Coach Costa also puts a strong emphasis on mentorship and community standards.
“It’s important that our players understand that how they represent themselves in school and in the community matters just as much as what happens on Friday nights,” he said. “If our athletes graduate from our program with confidence, strong character, and a clear understanding of what it means to be accountable to themselves and others, then we have been successful beyond the teaching of football.”
Athletic Director Manigan said the district is eager to see the program’s next chapter under Costa’s leadership.
“We are very excited to see Brendan step into the head coaching role,” Manigan said. “His familiarity with our students, his knowledge of the game and his dedication to building a positive team culture made him stand out throughout a highly competitive hiring process.”
