MAYNARD — The Town of Maynard Tree Committee is proud to announce that the Downtown Arboretum of Maynard has earned official accreditation through ArbNet’s Arboretum Accreditation Program and is now listed as an accredited arboretum in the internationally-recognized Morton Register of Arboreta.
This accreditation marks a significant milestone for Maynard’s community-based tree initiative, recognizing the Downtown Arboretum’s commitment to excellence in tree stewardship, ecological education, and public engagement. ArbNet’s program is the only global accreditation program specifically for arboreta and sets standards for planning, governance, tree collections, public programming, and long-term conservation practices.
Through its accreditation, Maynard joins a global network of tree-focused institutions dedicated to enhancing their collections, expanding public programming, and fostering community engagement with nature.
The Downtown Arboretum, supported collaboratively by the Maynard Tree Committee, Maynard Tree Corps, and the Town of Maynard Department of Public Works, enhances Maynard’s downtown streetscapes, civic spaces, and municipal properties with a diverse collection of primarily native tree species that benefit local wildlife, improve air quality, and strengthen urban resilience. Embedded in the Maynard Cultural district–where people shop, dine, and explore the art-centered culture of the town–the Downtown Arboretum may be one of the very few street-
based arboreta in the United States.
“Maynard’s volunteer tree advocates have ignited a spark of enthusiasm, commitment, and collaboration focused on enhancing the heart of the community,” said Chair of the Maynard Tree Committee, Danny Schissler. “Beyond enhancing the aesthetic appeal of urban spaces through urban forestry improvements, this work has advanced community engagement through its educational impacts on local youth and environmental enthusiasts throughout the community. This project showcases how collaborative community efforts can lead to remarkable accomplishments.”
Additionally, the efforts of the Tree Committee and Tree Corps–as well as the Downtown Arboretum designation–have significantly forwarded goals of Maynard’s 2020 Master Plan by expanding the tree canopy and integrating shade trees into the Town’s pedestrian circulation systems, meeting the goals of Maynard’s local planning framework, which opens key funding opportunities for the Town from a variety of state and regional sources.
