Woburn High School Safely Evacuated Following Report of Gas Leak

WOBURN — Superintendent Matthew Crowley and Principal Thomas Qualey report that Woburn High School was evacuated on Thursday morning following reports of the smell of gas in the music suite.

School visitors reported the odor at about 10:45 a.m. Principal Qualey and facilities staff investigated, then contacted the Woburn Police and Fire Departments per district policies and procedures.

Upon arrival, first responders recommended evacuating the building. Given the freezing temperatures, some students and staff were moved to the adjacent Malcolm White Elementary School, while others were transported to Shamrock Elementary School.

District leadership then decided to dismiss classes for the day, with students being bused home from the High School.

No students or staff requested medical attention.

“We appreciate our students and staff for their understanding and cooperation, which allowed us to have everyone out of the building as soon as possible,” Superintendent Crowley said. “Thank you to our public safety partners for their expertise and guidance. And thank you to North Suburban Transportation and NRT Bus Services for responding so quickly to our needs.”

Crews from National Grid remain at the school to determine whether there is a leak.
