Stoughton Police Department Successfully De-Escalates Mental Health Crisis

STOUGHTON — Chief Donna McNamara reports that the Stoughton Police Department and law enforcement partners successfully de-escalated a situation involving an individual experiencing a mental health crisis.

On Sunday, Jan. 18, at about 4:09 p.m., the Stoughton Police Department responded to a home on Seaver Street for a report of an individual experiencing a mental health crisis.

Officers determined the individual had barricaded themselves inside and could have a knife. Stoughton Police set up a perimeter to maintain public safety.

Stoughton Fire and Canton Police, Avon Police, and Randolph Police also responded.

Stoughton Police, using their training and expertise, were able to establish communication with the individual and safely de-escalated the situation. The individual exited the home, unarmed, on their own. The individual was safely taken into custody without injury.

The individual was connected with appropriate mental health services and is not facing criminal charges.

“I am proud of our officers and our mutual aid partners for their commitment to the safety of our community. They were able to safely de-escalate this situation which turned into a successful outcome,” said Chief McNamara. ” I would also like to thank our community members for their patience and understanding while we responded to this incident. We are thankful that we are able to assist this individual and get them the help they need.”
