Selfless Leadership: Pentucket Middle School Students Chosen as Project 351 Ambassadors

Leadership shows up in quiet, consistent ways in the classrooms and hallways of Pentucket Regional Middle School.

This year, three eighth graders whose actions embody selfless service to others have been selected as ambassadors for Project 351, a statewide youth-led service initiative dedicated to developing the next generation of civic leaders.

Marina Bistany of Merrimac, Owen Potter of Groveland, and Louis Sayani of West Newbury, and were unanimously chosen by their teachers to represent Pentucket Regional Middle School. The honor places them among a select group of students across Massachusetts, with one eighth grader chosen from each of the state’s 351 cities and towns.

Project 351 is a yearlong leadership development program focused on service, civic engagement and social change. Ambassadors collaborate with peers from across the state to build skills, knowledge and compassion, learning how they can make an impact in their communities.

“Louis, Marina and Owen represent the best of Pentucket,” said Superintendent Justin Bartholomew. “Their kindness, humility and commitment to others are qualities that define true leadership.”

Teachers and school staff offered their thoughts about the ambassadors.

  • Owen as a student who leads naturally through his actions. Known for his positive attitude and strong work ethic, Owen is often seen stepping up quietly to help others: “He is kind, compassionate and humble. He leads by example and consistently puts others first.”
  • Louis was recognized for his inclusive nature and sense of empathy. Teachers noted that Louis is someone who thinks about the needs of others and perseveres when challenges arise: “His selflessness and determination allow him to inspire those around him.”
  • Marina was picked for her ability to make others feel seen, heard and valued. Teachers described her as an “unsung hero” whose empathy and kindness bring joy to her peers: “She consistently strives to include everyone, and her kindness has a lasting impact on the school community.”

The three ambassadors will begin their Project 351 journey at the organization’s Launch Day on Saturday, Jan. 17, in Boston. Honoring the legacies of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, the event marks the students’ 12-month commitment to service and leadership development.

Louis, Marina and Owen will bring what they have learned back to their hometowns, where each student will develop and lead a service initiative aimed at enacting change in their communities.

Following their year of service, they will be welcomed into Project 351’s alumni network, gaining access to mentorship and support throughout high school and beyond.

Founded in 2011, Project 351 has engaged more than 5,588 students across Massachusetts, empowering young people to address real-world challenges. According to Founder and Executive Director Carolyn Casey, the program’s impact lies in its belief that young people are capable of enacting change when given the opportunity.
