NORTH READING — The North Reading Fire Department congratulates Firefighter Sean O’Brien on being promoted to the rank of Captain during a ceremony Tuesday at North Reading Town Hall.

Capt. O’Brien is a North Reading native, and a fourth-generation firefighter. His father, Ed O’Brien, served as North Reading’s Fire Chief from 1993 to 2005.

Capt. O’Brien joined the North Reading Fire Department in 2010 as a call firefighter and became a full-time firefighter in 2011.

He has also served as the department’s Advanced Life Support (ALS) coordinator, and recently began serving as the department’s EMS coordinator, overseeing all of the department’s EMS services.

Capt. O’Brien was sworn in on Tuesday by Town Clerk Susan Duplin during a ceremony at Town Hall.

Capt. O’Brien currently works on Group 3, and he will serve there as a Captain before moving to Group 2 to oversee that group in his new position. He will also maintain his role as EMS coordinator.

“Capt. O’Brien has done an outstanding job of overseeing and coordinating our ALS and EMS operations, and he is an eminently qualified firefighter who I am sure will excel in his new role as a captain,” said Chief Don Stats. “I want to congratulate Sean on this well-earned promotion, and I want to thank the entire O’Brien family for their continued service to this community and this department.”
