EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence Police Department is asking for community support as officers and detectives investigate a break in and vandalism that left a city church unable to hold services on Sunday morning.
On Sunday, Jan. 11, at approximately 8 a.m., East Providence Police were called to Saint Martha’s Church, 2595 Pawtucket Ave., for a report of a break-in and vandalism.
Officers and church leaders discovered that, during the overnight hours, someone forced entry into the church and vandalized the altar, living quarters, and rectory. Officers observed numerous broken windows, graffiti, and writing on the walls. Vandals had rummaged several areas of the building.
The break-in is believed to have occurred between 8 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday.
Detectives from the East Providence Police Department Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the East Providence Police Department Major Crimes Unit are leading the investigation.
Investigators are asking members of the public to check their surveillance cameras and to please report any suspicious individuals who were seen in the area between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m.
