WHITMAN — Chief Timothy Clancy reports that the Whitman Fire Department successfully prevented an outside fire from damaging a Whitman home on Christmas Day.
Whitman Fire responded to 430 Washington St. at 1:49 p.m. for a report of an outside fire that was spreading. Upon arrival, firefighters under the command of Lieutenant Pat Travers, observed that the fire had spread to a fence and a wooden deck near the two-story wood frame single-family home.
The firefighters launched a fast attack on the fire and were able to stop the flames in their tracks within minutes.
Some of the exterior vinyl siding of the home had burned, but after a review, it was determined that the house was safe for the family to remain inside, and there was no interior damage or health hazards.
“This is a situation where fast response time and proper tactics played a key role in saving a family’s house in Whitman, on Christmas Day no less,” Chief Clancy said. “Our firefighters did an excellent job getting to the scene and extinguishing the fire right as it was starting to catch the house. Minutes, even seconds mattered in this situation, and we are very pleased to be able to allow a family to go back into their home safely today.”
The Whitman Building Commissioner and Board of Health were notified.
The fire was investigated by the Whitman Fire Department, and the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental.
