The artistic talents and creativity of three Mascoma Regional High School students will be shared with New Hampshire Public Radio supporters throughout the state this holiday season.
Works by Brynn Higbie, Mia McLaughlin, and Joselyn DeAquino were selected as winners in the third annual NHPR Young Artist Contest, which highlights student art from across the state.
- Brynn’s work, “Skiing at Ragged,” shows skiing at Ragged Mountain in Orange: “Skiing at Ragged is an illustration that represents my favorite activity in the winter: skiing! Ragged is the mountain I go skiing on with my family. I have a lot of lovely memories sitting with my Mom at the tables inside the lodge eating fresh cookies and watching the people outside skiing down the mountain.”
- Mia’s “Mascoma Radio” shows the Mascoma Regional High School radio station: “When I found out that the theme for the NHPR Young Artist Project was ‘radio’ I was brought back to the peaceful fifth period freshman year where my friends started their own radio show for Mascoma High School. I loved it down there because I felt so at home, and it was just great to get to hang out with all my friends. I want my art to bring people some of the peace I felt while making this artwork.”
- Joselyn’s “Where Wolves Wander” displays an outdoor scene in Canaan: “Growing up, I had an innate infatuation with animals. Wolves in particular … As a child, I was always attached to objects almost equally as much as humans. These days, I am capable of accepting and adapting to improve for the best. Change is common in our lives, even if on the outside, one might have no idea.”
“I am incredibly proud of Mia, Brynn, and Joselyn for taking the initiative to create original artworks for the NHPR Young Artists Contest. As their art teacher, I witness the talent and creativity our students bring to their work every day, and this achievement highlights the thoughtful, expressive pieces they create,” said instructor Bess French. “Their recognition also reflects the growth and energy of our visual art program. At Mascoma, strong support for the arts allows students to explore their creativity and accomplish amazing things.
“I am grateful to Zoë and the entire NHPR team for offering this opportunity to young artists across New Hampshire, allowing their work to be seen and enjoyed by a broader audience,” she said.
Student creations will be shared statewide on NHPR’s holiday greeting cards. Their work also will be shared on NHPR social media accounts during December.
“Community is at the heart of NHPR, and the Young Artist Project gives us a joyful way to connect with the imaginations of New Hampshire’s youth,” said Zoë Mitchell, NHPR’s Community Engagement Manager. “The Mascoma students’ artwork brings together warmth, community energy, and the kind of natural wonder that feels right at home here. We are so thrilled to share their work with people across the Granite State.”
