BEDFORD — Forty-seven motorists were cited for violating pedestrian safety laws in November as part of the Beford Police Department’s ongoing traffic enforcement initiative.
Bedford Police Department implemented a traffic enforcement initiative with a focus on crosswalk safety, assigning officers to high-visibility patrols to mitigate crashes and maintain safety at crosswalks through enforcement, education, and awareness.
A total of 47 operators were specifically stopped for failing to Yield to a Pedestrian in a Crosswalk. Under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 89 Section 11, operators who fail to yield to pedestrians in a marked crosswalk face a fine of $205. The results of the enforcement effort were as follows:
- Civil Citations – 39
- Written Warning – 7
- Criminal Application -1
As a result of the criminal complaint, the operator was issued a summons for Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle and a Crosswalk Violation.
During the month, officers conducted proactive policing education efforts to remind operators to adhere to the posted traffic signs, crosswalks, and allow 4 feet of clearance before passing pedestrians or vulnerable users, or those who are pulled over.
The initiative was funded through a state Municipal Road Safety Grant.
