STONEHAM — Chief Matthew Grafton reports that the Stoneham Fire Department and its mutual aid partners fought a fully-involved basement fire on Tuesday evening.
Firefighters were dispatched to 40 Broadway St. shortly after 8 p.m. for a report of a fire in the basement of a 1.5 story Cape Cod style single family home. Upon arrival, the first firefighters on scene reported that fire was spreading from the basement to the first floor kitchen area.
The Stoneham Fire Department initiated an interior attack and received help from surrounding communities to get the fire under control.
The fire was under control after about 45 minutes, but the home sustained significant heat, fire and smoke damage. Four occupants were displaced and were making alternate housing arrangements. No injuries were reported to residents or first responders.
Mutual aid crews from Reading, Woburn, Winchester, Melrose and Wakefield responded to the scene along with the Boston Sparks Association A-10 Incident Support Unit and multiple units from the Stoneham Police Department, Stoneham Public Works, and Armstrong Ambulance also responded.
Medford, Malden and Saugus provided station coverage for Stoneham during the fire. While providing station coverage, the Saugus Fire Department crew covering Stoneham responded to a reported car fire on Jefts Terrace.
Chief Grafton praised the work of firefighters, medics, police officers and all agencies that responded to the scene.
“This was a fast-moving fire that had to be fought in less-than-ideal weather conditions, but our firefighters went to work quickly to prevent further damage,” Chief Grafton said. “We also express our sincere gratitude to partner agencies and neighbors for providing necessary assistance and coverage this evening.”
The origin and cause of the fire are under investigation. Chief Grafton estimated the damage at $250,000.
