HANSON — Superintendent of Schools Jeffrey Szymaniak reports that the Whitman-Hanson Regional School District has issued Reduction-in-Force (RIF) notifications to staff members as part of the district’s plan to address a significant budget deficit.
Over the past several weeks, school principals and the district’s Central Office Leadership Team have met regularly to review staffing needs and identify steps to stabilize the district’s financial position.
As part of this review, and in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement with the Whitman-Hanson Education Association (WHEA), staff members with professional status or seniority may transition into positions currently held by employees with less seniority or non-professional status.
RIF notifications were issued Friday to staff members impacted by this process. Five teachers, two long-term substitutes, 11 paraprofessionals, and five non-union staff were issued RIF notifications. All staffing adjustments were made in accordance with established contractual processes and state requirements.
No decisions were based on performance. Teachers and paraprofessionals who are transitioning into new roles or classrooms are experienced, qualified educators who remain fully certified in their subject areas and grade levels.
The district is working closely with building leaders to support smooth transitions for students and staff. Principals and instructional teams are working to ensure classroom routines and instruction continue without disruption.
The district will continue to monitor its financial situation and remains hopeful that some positions may be restored in the future. Building principals will notify families directly if changes affect their child’s classroom.
“This is a challenging time for our students, staff and families, and I want to thank the community for its understanding,” said Superintendent Szymaniak. “Despite this budget shortfall, we remain committed to providing a high-quality, supportive, safe and engaging education for every student.”
