RAYNHAM — Fire Chief Bryan LaCivita reports that the Raynham Fire Department responded to and extinguished a working structure fire on Broadway Thursday morning.
Raynham Fire crews responded to a single-family home at 1587 Broadway (Route 138) around 7:45 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 30, following reports of smoke in the building.
Crews arrived to find heavy fire in the rear of the house. Seven occupants, five cats, a rabbit and a couple snakes escaped from the burning home. One cat died in the fire.
Mutual aid was provided on the scene by West Bridgewater, Bridgewater, Easton and Taunton fire departments. Middleboro Fire Department covered the station.
No injuries to firefighters or human occupants were reported, although two occupants were evaluated at the scene by EMS.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze in about 30 minutes.
The American Red Cross was on the way to the scene to provide assistance to the home’s occupants.
State Police assigned to the State Fire Marshall’s Office assisted on the scene. An investigation by Raynham Fire, Raynham Police and Massachusetts State Police into the cause of the fire is underway.
Crews from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation assisted by closing down Broadway, from Elm to Wilbur streets, until the roads were reopened around 10:30 a.m.
“As always, I’d like to thank the Raynham Police Department and our mutual aid partners — the West Bridgewater, Bridgewater, Easton, Taunton and Middleboro fire departments — who immediately responded to assist at the scene and at the station,” said Chief LaCivita. “House fires like this should serve as vital reminders to homeowners to ensure their smoke alarms are functioning properly. Smoke alarms save lives and property and make all of our jobs a little bit easier.”
