METHUEN — Mayor D.J. METHUEN — Mayor D.J. Beauregard, Director of Health, Human Services, and Inspections Caeli Tegan Zampach and Methuen Senior Activity Center Director Susan Riccio will announce the launch of a citywide food drive to support more than 10,000 Methuen residents expected to lose SNAP benefits starting Saturday.

WHEN:

Monday, Oct. 27, at 4 p.m.

WHERE:

Methuen Senior Center, 77 Lowell St., Methuen

WHAT:

Mayor Beauregard, Director Zampach and Director Riccio will announce the launch of a citywide food drive that will support the 10,333 Methuen residents who are set to stop receiving SNAP benefits as of Saturday, Nov. 1.

The Methuen Cares Food Drive will begin collecting donations today at eight locations, with food distribution set to begin on Nov. 1 at the Methuen Senior Center.

Any Methuen resident who previously received SNAP benefits or other government assistance, such as WIC, heating and fuel assistance, or veterans’ assistance will be able to receive food collected during the drive.

This initiative is being launched because the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance reports that roughly 19 percent of all Methuen residents depend on SNAP benefits to feed their families from month to month, and local food pantries are already struggling to keep their shelves stocked.

“The federal government shutdown may be a partisan political issue, but its effect on the ground here in Methuen is not. We have families and neighbors who are going to go hungry, and our city government will not stand idly by while that happens,” said Mayor Beauregard. “I’m calling on all Methuen residents and leaders to stand up and support your neighbors.”
