TOWNSEND — The community turned out in force as the Townsend Police Department hosted a celebration of National Night Out at North Middlesex Regional High School on Tuesday evening.
National Night Out, which seeks to build relationships and create positive interactions between police and the communities they serve, is typically held on the first Tuesday in August. Townsend Police delayed their local celebration so that more police resources could attend from nearby communities.
Among the resources from neighboring communities was Skippy, the Hollis, N.H. Police Department’s comfort dog, a cruiser from the Middlesex Sheriff’s Department, and an armored SWAT vehicle from the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC) that residents and children were able to explore.
This celebration of National Night Out was a first for the Townsend Police Department’s very own K9 Ruby, who is already a favorite at community events.
The event included police K9 demonstrations, Remote Control car racing, with vehicles, ramps, and a track provided by RC Excitement, of Fitchburg, and a magic show provided by Magic with Jay. A bouncy house and LEGOs were available for kids, and volunteers grilled free hot dogs, which were available along with popcorn and drinks thanks to Patterson Plumbing and Heating.

“National Night Out allows us to create relationships and bonds with our community, which is a vital part of community policing,” said Chief Sartell. “I want to thank all of the vendors and community groups that helped to make the night special, and I want to thank the community for coming out to meet us. Thank you, Townsend!”
