NORTH READING — Chief Don Stats and the North Reading Fire Department are celebrating the career of Deputy Chief Barry Galvin, who will retire on Oct. 1.
Galvin’s official last day of service is Sept. 30. The Department celebrated his retirement on Tuesday, Sept. 23, with a party featuring members of the Fire Department and Town, and Galvin’s family.
Deputy Chief Galvin has served North Reading for over 31 years. He joined the Department in 1993 as a Firefighter/EMT and was promoted to Captain in 2005. He was appointed Deputy Chief in 2011, a position he will have held for 14 years at the time of his retirement.
In addition to fulfilling his routine duties, Deputy Galvin has gone above and beyond to improve the department and community as a whole. As EMS Coordinator, he oversees the purchase of ambulances, supplies and equipment, ensures the Department maintains training standards in accordance with state laws, and manages the EMS system to ensure efficient and effective emergency medical care.
He is also the Liaison to Elder Affairs, in which he works to provide fire, fall and safety workshops to residents at the Senior Center. In this role, he also prepared grant documentation to provide free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to seniors.
In addition to those roles, Galvin is also an Infection Control Officer, Fire Education Specialist and a certified CPR instructor.
“Deputy Chief Galvin has had an immeasurable impact on our community. His career has been rooted in enhancing the Department’s ability to serve our community, which has inspired many within our Department to do the same,” said Chief Stats. “Because of the perseverance, passion and commitment Deputy Galvin has instilled in each of us, his legacy will continue long past his retirement. We wish him the best and congratulate him on a truly impactful career.”
