TEWKSBURY — Chief Ryan Columbus reports that the Tewksbury Police Department responded Tuesday morning to a crash on Whipple Road that resulted in the death of a Wilmington Police Department therapy dog.

On Tuesday, Sept. 23, at approximately 8 a.m., Tewksbury Police responded to Whipple Road near Wells Drive for a report of a two-vehicle crash.

Officers arrived to discover a two-vehicle crash involving a Toyota Camry and a Mazda 3. Both drivers were transported to local hospitals by ambulance, with injuries that did not immediately appear to be life-threatening. A Wilmington Police Therapy Dog, Zena, was seriously injured in the crash.

Zena was transported by ambulance to the Bulger Animal Hospital in Lawrence under provisions of Nero’s Law, which permits police dogs to be transported by ambulance when necessary.

A preliminary investigation determined that the Mazda 3, driven by a 26-year-old Westminster woman, crossed over the double yellow center line and struck the Toyota Camry head-on. The Camry was driven by a Wilmington Police Department employee and the handler of the therapy dog, Zena.

The Mazda driver will be summonsed for negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a marked lanes violation. Her name cannot be released by law at this time, pending the issuance of a criminal complaint.

An investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
