Masconomet Student Takes the Spotlight at National Down Syndrome Buddy Walk

Masconomet Regional High School student Matthew Goss was among 2,500 participants in the National Down Syndrome Society’s 31st NYC Buddy Walk.

Masconomet Regional High School student Matthew Goss had his moment in the bright lights of Times Square recently.

Matthew was among 2,500 participants in the National Down Syndrome Society’s 31st NYC Buddy Walk on Saturday, Sept. 6. His photo was among 500 selected for a presentation on two large video screens.

Matthew is active in Masconomet’s Best Buddies Club, which encourages one-to-one friendships as well as other opportunities for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

The club is an official chapter of Best Buddies International and had 72 participants last year. Signup for this year is underway.

Asked what Best Buddies means to him, Matthew responded, “My friends!”

“That answer is truly what Best Buddies is all about,” said club advisor Kevin Carens. “We want to make sure every student who has a challenge has the opportunity to make connections with their peers. The students who take part are terrific and are the reason this is so successful.”

Matthew’s team will also be walking in the Boston Best Buddies Friendship Walk on Oct. 18. Masconomet hopes to have a great turn out in support of all the Buddies walking.
