Gloucester Police Department Community Impact Unit Moving Offices During Renovation Project

GLOUCESTER — The Gloucester Police Department Community Impact Unit (CIU) will be relocating its office to 5 Center St.

The CIU is moving from its current office space on Middle Street while the YMCA completes a major renovation project on the Patillo Building, which is where the CIU office is housed.

The new Community Impact Unit location at 5 Center St. will be officially open on Monday, Sept. 29. The old location at 67 Middle St., which is owned and operated by the YMCA, will be completely renovated to include 29 additional single-room, community-subsidized housing units. This renovation will take approximately one year.

About the Community Impact Unit

Since the CIU launched over five years ago, it has worked to support the entire community on a number of issues, including mental health, substance use, homelessness, and general safety through various community programs, resources, partnerships, check-ins, initiatives, and more.

“The Community Impact Unit is an invaluable part of our community,” said Chief Conley, “Their work has been instrumental in bringing our community together, and providing service to those who need it. Their work knows no borders, and they are constantly expanding to ensure that every resident feels safe and welcomed. Gloucester is fortunate to have them at their service.”

While the CIU maintains emphasis on collaborating with Gloucester’s most vulnerable populations, the unit has also focused on strengthening its relationship with Gloucester’s youth. Those efforts currently include three school resource officers (Officers Michael Scola, Brendan Chipperini, Peter Sutera and comfort dog Ace), a mental health clinician, and a Community Health Navigator who provides services to individuals with substance misuse disorder.

In addition, the unit has launched several well-received initiatives in recent years, including The Kops N Kids Youth Anglers program and The Lobster Crate Race at Pavilion Beach. These events successfully bring together the community, but also broaden the reach of the community’s achievements, creating a sense of pride within Gloucester.
