The Town of Marion, the Marion Police Department, state lawmakers who represent the community and other local officials will celebrate the completion of the new Marion Maritime Center with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the facility.

Work on the building was completed earlier this year, following about 10 months of construction and five years of planning. The $3.5 million project was funded with the help of a $1.9 million Seaport Economic Council grant through the Massachusetts Executive Office of Economic Development.

The 1,500-square-foot building at 1 Island Wharf Road was constructed by the Marion-based South Coast Improvement Co.

The building, staffed by four permanent, full-time Marion Police Department employees and several seasonal employees, is packed with cutting-edge technology, including radio systems, marine radios and cameras. The facility also features space that can be used for community meetings.

“We look forward to gathering as a community, together with our state lawmakers and local leaders, to celebrate our new Maritime Center. This is an incredible asset for our town, as the base of operations for our harbormaster services, as part of the Marion Police Department,” said Police Chief Richard B. Nighelli. “This project has been an amazing team effort, and we are grateful for this opportunity to acknowledge all the hard work that has been done and all the community support that has made this all possible. We are extremely thankful for the grant funding provided by the Seaport Economic Council, which was so crucial to making this state-of-the-art facility a reality for our community. This ribbon cutting ceremony will be a fitting recognition for all the important contributions that helped bring this to fruition.”
