The U.S. Marine Corps was authorized and established on Nov. 10, 1775. Fort Sewell, known as Gale’s Head Fort prior to 1814, is a coastal fortification built in 1634 as one of the first English colonial forts in the Americas. In the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, Fort Sewall defended the shores of Marblehead from incoming ships in several military campaigns. It served the English colonies during the French and Indian War, became garrisoned by John Glover’s 14th Colonial “Marblehead Regiment” in 1775 and provided the shelter of its big guns to protect the USS Constitution from British frigates during the War of 1812.
