NEWBURY — Fire Chief David Evans reports that the Newbury Fire Department responded to a gas leak in an industrial building Tuesday morning.
On Tuesday, Aug. 12, at about 7:50 a.m., Newbury Fire was dispatched to an industrial building at 19 Central St., for report of an odor of gas.
Responding crews observed an odor of gas consistent with propane coming from the first floor of the building. All occupants of the building had self-evacuated prior to the Department’s arrival.
Crews detected low levels of gas in the building, at which point they requested the Rowley Fire Department to arrive on scene with an additional engine.
The Department shut off the building’s gas supply and contacted the supplier, Eastern Propane & Oil. A technician from Eastern Propane & Oil later arrived on scene and was able to locate and mitigate the leak, which was found in the attic of the building.
Newbury Fire remained on scene to ventilate the building, and the occupants were allowed back into the building after about two and a half hours.
No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.
Newburyport and West Newbury Fire provided station coverage.
“This response is a strong example of the commitment and service we strive to provide to our community each day,” said Chief Evans. “Our crews and mutual aid partners worked on scene for many hours to ensure that the building was completely safe for occupants to return, and I thank them for their efforts.”
