BLACKSTONE — Blackstone Police Department’s comfort dog Captain had a ruff Sunday.

Captain and School Resource Officer (SRO) Joseph Niemczyk were on their way to train along Blackstone River Bikeway when Captain suffered a lower leg fracture while exiting the vehicle.

SRO Niemczyk immediately took Captain to the Foster Hospital for Small Animals, part of the Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in North Grafton, where an excellent surgical team, led by Dr. Vivian Ojeda-Rosenthal, put him back together.

“We’re thankful Captain is expected to make a full recovery,” said Chief Gregory Gilmore. “The Tufts doctors did an amazing job patching him up. We can’t thank them enough.”

Although Captain’s training will be temporarily pawsed while he recovers, he’s expected back on the beat soon.
