ATTLEBORO — Chief Scott T. Lachance reports that the Attleboro Fire Department responded to and extinguished a house fire on Saturday night, the second structure fire in less than 24 hours.
On Saturday, Aug. 9, at about 10:58 p.m., the Attleboro Fire Department responded to 21 Greenwich St. for a report of a house fire.
When they arrived, firefighters observed heavy fire coming from the rear of a two-story, single-family home with an attached in-law apartment.
The first arriving engine, which had been returning from a separate emergency in the same neighborhood, arrived within two minutes of dispatch.
Crews quickly knocked down the bulk of the fire from the exterior before transitioning inside to extinguish hot spots. The fire was contained to the second-floor in-law apartment.
All occupants were able to escape the home on their own.
Two people were taken by ambulance to Sturdy Memorial Hospital for evaluation of suspected smoke inhalation; both have since been released.
The residents of the affected apartment will be temporarily displaced.
No firefighters were injured during the incident.
“This could have been a much larger fire,” said Attleboro Fire District Chief Scott Godin. “Engine 2 happened to be in the area at the time of the call. Their quick arrival and decisive actions stopped the fire before it spread to other parts of the structure.”
Mutual aid was provided on scene and for station coverage by the North Attleborough, Seekonk, Pawtucket, and Norton Fire Departments. Crews cleared the scene at approximately 12:45 a.m.
The Attleboro Fire Investigation Unit determined the fire was accidental, caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials.
Saturday night’s fire was the second structure fire in Attleboro in less than 24 hours. Firefighters extinguished a two-alarm fire at the El Buen Sazon restaurant on Pine Street early Saturday morning. The building was deemed to be a total loss, and the cause remains under investigation.
