Town of Newbury Invites Community to Attend Annual Purple Heart Day Ceremony

NEWBURY — The Town of Newbury would like to invite the public to join in honoring the dedicated veterans who fought for their country at its annual Purple Heart Day Ceremony.

WHEN:

Thursday, Aug. 7, beginning at 7 p.m.

WHERE:

Comrades Monument, Upper Green, Route 1A

WHAT:

Purple Heart Day is observed annually on Aug. 7. It provides Americans with an opportunity to pay their respects to the millions of individuals who fought and continue to fight for their country’s freedom.

The Purple Heart is awarded to those injured in combat or in remembrance of those killed in action. The original Purple Heart medal, the Badge of Military Merit, was established by George Washington on Aug. 7, 1782. It is the nation’s oldest military medal.

The Town of Newbury was officially recognized as a Purple Heart Community in March 2022.

Newbury’s annual wreath-laying ceremony will take place on Aug. 7, starting at 7 p.m. William DiMaio, the Select Board Chair and a Vietnam War veteran, will host a brief recognition ceremony.

All veterans and residents are welcome to attend to pay their respects.
