CANTON — Town Administrator Charles E. Doody and the Canton Select Board express their disappointment in a recent decision by the Superior Court to deny an injunction that would have compelled Republic Services to resume full operations amid an ongoing work stoppage.
On Monday, a Superior Court judge denied a request for an injunction filed by Canton, Beverly, Danvers, Gloucester, Malden and Peabody.
The communities sought injunctive relief to abate public health nuisances within the municipalities. They asked the court to order Republic Services to immediately collect all trash and recycling as required by contract and immediately cease and desist from any further activity causing nuisance conditions.
The judge wrote that the court cannot resolve the labor dispute and that issuing an order of injunctive relief would be too vague and not enforceable.
The Town of Canton has been doing everything in its power to mitigate the impact of the work stoppage on residents and business owners. Officials are continuing to explore all available avenues to address the disruption and maintain essential services.
“This is an issue affecting thousands of residents and businesses in many communities, and we are deeply disappointed by the court’s decision,” said Town Administrator Doody. “We are committed to doing everything we can to reduce the impact on our community and will continue to push for a resolution.”
Canton officials continue to coordinate closely with representatives from 16 other communities also impacted by the work stoppage. The group has been sharing updates, strategies and resources to manage the situation collectively.
Additionally, the Town of Canton has met with Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll and other state officials to urge them to intervene and advocate on behalf of affected cities and towns.
The Town strongly urges Republic Services and the company’s labor union to return to the bargaining table and negotiate in good faith toward a resolution.
“We urge both parties to resume talks immediately,” said Town Administrator Doody. “Our residents deserve reliable service, and this situation must be resolved as soon as possible.”
