IPSWICH — Police Chief Paul Nikas and Fire Chief Paul Parisi report that the Ipswich Police and Fire Departments responded Friday when a man on a boat suffered a serious injury off Crane Beach.
On Friday, July 25, at approximately 5:10 p.m., Ipswich Police, Fire, and Action Ambulance were dispatched to a report of a person that dove off a boat, struck his head, and suffered a serious injury. While first responders were in route, they were updated that the injured man was on Steep Hill Beach, unconscious, and that live-saving care was being performed.
Upon arrival, units found the male to be conscious and being attended to by Crane Beach personnel. The injured man, who was in his 20’s, was suffering from acute spinal injuries.
A Boston MedFlight helicopter was called and arrived approximately 12 minutes later. The helicopter was directed to land on the beach, where Fire and EMS personnel were treating the patient. Patient care was transferred to MedFlight personnel, and the patient was flown to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington for further treatment.
“This was an example of our public safety members working seamlessly with the Crane’s Beach personnel to ensure a successful rescue and extrication,” Chief Parisi stated. “We train with Crane’s Beach personnel often, and today it paid off. We thank The Trustees for their support of this partnership. A special thanks goes to the bystanders who pulled the victim from the water, and to the two bystander physicians who performed life-saving measures that likely averted a fatality.”
