GLOUCESTER — Chief Edward Conley reports that the Gloucester Police Department arrested and charged a Gloucester man following an incident at the City’s Department of Public Works facility.
WILLIAM EVANS, AGE 71, of GLOUCESTER, was arrested and charged with:
- Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon
- Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle
On Thursday, July 24, at about 11:58 a.m., Gloucester Police were dispatched to the DPW facility for reports of an unwelcome individual on the property. While on the way, Police received an update that a DPW worker had been struck by a vehicle.
Upon arrival, officers located the DPW worker and the individual, whom they identified as EVANS.
A preliminary investigation determined that EVANS had come to the DPW to drop off recycling before the facility was open. Gloucester residents normally have recycling pickup, but due to an ongoing strike involving waste contractor Republic Services, residents are allowed to drop off recycling directly at the facility from 12-6 p.m.
EVANS had arrived early for drop off and refused to move his vehicle so as not to block DPW vehicles. EVANS then drove his vehicle into the DPW worker. There were no reported injuries.
EVANS was arrested without incident.
EVANS is scheduled to be arraigned in Gloucester District Court on Friday.
