NAHANT — Chief Timothy Furlong and the Nahant Police Department are pleased to share that Officer Heather Leary has been promoted to Sergeant, making her the first female sergeant in department history.
Officer Leary was officially sworn in as Sgt. on Wednesday, July 23, during a ceremony at Town Hall. She will be overseeing the night shift from midnight to 8 a.m.
Sgt. Leary previously worked as a Dispatch Supervisor for Metro North Regional Emergency Communications Center.
Sgt. Leary joined the Nahant Police Department in 2019 as a civilian Police Matron and was responsible for the care and supervision of female prisoners and detainees. She then became a reserve officer in 2020 and began as the department’s first full-time female officer in 2021.
“I would like to congratulate Sgt. Leary on this well-deserved promotion,” said Chief Furlong. “She has already proven herself to be a leader in the department, and I look forward to watching her continue to grow in this next chapter of her career here in Nahant.”
