DURHAM — Superintendent Dr. Robert Shaps, Principal Rebecca Noe, and Director of Athletics Andrew Lathrop are pleased to share that four Oyster River High School track and field athletes competed and placed at New Balance Nationals Outdoor.
On June 19, the girls’ track and field 4 x 1 mile relay team traveled to Philadelphia to compete in the New Balance Nationals Outdoor competition.
The team qualified to compete at Nationals based on their times during the season, which had to be 21:25.00 or lower.
At Nationals, they ran a time of 20:30.57, earning them 5th place.
The team’s consistency and performance are not only a determination of their skill, but also their team chemistry, which began long before the student-athletes even started running track.
The team is made up of two sets of sisters: Mackenzie and Madelyn Cook and Olivia and Haley Kavanagh.
This is not the first time the group has performed well enough in the regular season to qualify for Nationals. Last year, in the same event, the team placed 8th.
“I am so proud of all of our track and field athletes. This group being recognized on a national level is a stellar way to end the season,” said Lathrop. “This accomplishment highlights the effort and determination the entire team has invested in improving and progressing our track and field programs.”
Not only did the team progress significantly between visits to Nationals, but their 5th place finish earned them the title of All-American Award Winners, which is awarded to the top six teams in each event. Each of the student-athletes additionally received a medal for their accomplishment.
