Wayland Police Investigating Incident Involving More Than 100 Packages Found in Trash Receptacle

WAYLAND — Chief Ed Burman reports that the Wayland Police Department is investigating after over 100 packages were found in a metal trash receptacle.

On Monday, June 23, Wayland Police were notified by a resident that they had noticed a large trash receptacle located on Commonwealth Road that contained four unopened packages with shipping labels still on them. Wayland Police responded to the area and documented the packages.

On Tuesday, June 24, at approximately 8:30 a.m., Wayland Police were dispatched to Commonwealth Road again by the same reporting party, who discovered that the trash receptacle contained a significantly increased number of unopened packages with shipping labels still on them.

The reporting party believed the packages may be part of a recent package scam affecting residents across multiple towns, as they had seen an influx of social media posts about individuals looking for their packages that appeared to have been delivered to the wrong addresses.

A preliminary investigation determined that the packages had been marked and documented as delivered, but residents and community members never received them. Police located over 100 packages, which appeared to all be from the same delivery service, UniUni.

Wayland Police are currently working with UniUni to ensure the packages are properly delivered to community members.

Wayland Police are seeking the public’s assistance and asks residents and community members who may have information about this incident to please contact the Wayland Police Department at 508-358-4721.

The department has notified the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office of the ongoing investigation.
