MAYNARD — The Town of Maynard is pleased to announce the September 2025 launch of Maynard Power Choice, a new community electricity buying program from the Town for residents and business owners.
The town is joining more than 200 other Massachusetts cities and towns with similar programs, including the communities of Acton, Sudbury, Lincoln, and Wayland. Through the program, electricity customers in Maynard will have three new options for the supply charge on their Eversource electric bills, including two that provide increased electricity from renewable sources. All Maynard Power Choice options will provide savings compared with Eversource at launch, and prices are fixed for 26 months.
Participants in Maynard Power Choice will automatically receive an additional 5% of their electricity from renewable sources for a price of 13.800 ¢/kWh, which is below Eversource’s August 1 residential price of 14.884 ¢/kWh. That translates to a savings of more than $5/month for an average Maynard household. Two additional options are available by request: Participants can receive electricity that is 100 percent from renewable sources for 14.810 ¢/kWh or just the minimum amount from renewable sources required by law for 13.590 ¢/kWh. Both prices are also below Eversource’s August 1 residential price.
“Maynard Power Choice is a regulated, municipal electricity supply offering that gives our residents and business owners more control over the price and environmental impact of the electricity they buy,” said Maynard Town Administrator Gregory Johnson. “Getting the best value for the community was a priority, as was moving toward our community’s sustainability goals. I’m especially pleased that we are able to do both, and to offer more for less – more electricity from renewable sources for prices that beat Eversource.”
Maynard Power Choice prices are fixed from September 2025 until November 2027. In contrast, Eversource’s residential price will be in effect from August 1, 2025, through January 31, 2026, and future prices are not known. As a result, savings beyond that date cannot be guaranteed.
Maynard has signed a contract with Direct Energy Services, LLC to be the program’s electricity supplier. The decision was made using a competitive bidding process that took into consideration a range of factors, such as price and bidder experience, to ensure the strongest possible choice for the community. Eversource remains Maynard’s electric utility and will continue to deliver electricity to Maynard without interruption, address power outages, and handle all electricity billing. Maynard Power Choice impacts only Eversource’s electricity supply charge. Eversource’s delivery charges will not be impacted.
Like all similar programs across the state and in accordance with state law, Maynard Power Choice will use an automatic enrollment model. Electricity accounts with Eversource’s Basic Service, meaning accounts that do not have a private electricity supply contract, will be eligible for automatic enrollment in Maynard Power Choice in September and will see the program price on their October Eversource bill.
Participation in Maynard Power Choice is never required. Account holders eligible for automatic enrollment will receive a notification by mail from the Town in early July and can choose to opt out before being automatically enrolled if they do not wish to participate. Any customer who chooses to participate in Maynard Power Choice has the freedom to opt out at any time in the future with no fee or penalty. Electricity accounts with a private electricity supply contract will not be eligible for automatic
enrollment, but they can be enrolled in Maynard Power Choice by request.
Electricity customers who receive solar credits and/or solar incentive payments on their bill will continue to receive those credits or payments with no change. Electricity customers who receive fuel assistance or a low-income discount from Eversource will continue to receive that benefit with no change.
